'You're So Fat!': Exploring Ojibwe Discourse is a valuable contribution to cross-cultural understanding and Native Studies. Roger Spielmann is an associate professor in the Department of Native Studies, University of Sudbury. His belief that non-natives have much to learn in order to understand Native experience and culture was the impetus for this text. Spending a number of years in the Algonquin community of Pikogan in Quebec allowed him to begin his learning path. This text sets out to show how the techniques of conversation analysis and discourse analysis can introduce a basic understanding of the "Native" experience. He identifies the key to that understanding as the way that Native people talk about the experience. His chapters discuss conversation, storytelling, humour, language, and cosmology. Of particular interest is the chapter about Native humour and the examples using Ojibwe language conversations and the writings of Drew Hayden Taylor. Spielmann has succeeded in producing a work that allows the reader to see some of the wisdom, humour and joy expressed by First Nations that is so often missing in existing texts.
