Sunpainters: Eclipse of the Navajo Sun is a children's picture written and illustrated by Navajo artist Baje Whitethorne. He tells a story within a story drawn from his childhood experience and those of his young son about the solar eclipse and its meaning to the Navajo. A young Navajo boy named Kii Leonard is outside playing and listening to a radio when suddenly his grandfather calls the boy into the hogan. Kii Leonard expects to find his lunch meal waiting but grandfather tells him to sit down. Grandfather has something important to tell him because an eclipse is about to happen. Grandfather cautions the boy about not looking at the sun and proceeds to explain why they should remain indoors and be patient. Grandfather explains the origin of the teaching about the Little Painters, known as Na'ach'aahii, who were directed to come from the four directions with their paint brushes to make sure the colours of the rainbow be repainted in the world. Grandfather quietly explains that Navajo must remain quiet and respectful of Mother Earth during the eclipse. The story makes an excellent introduction to a science unit about the sun's rotation and the solar eclipse. Each page contains a beautifully illustrated work of art by the artist and writer. A note explains the eclipse and asks readers to think about their place in the world.
