How Medicine Came to the People: A Tale of the Ancient Cherokees is the picture book story of the origins of Cherokee herbal medicine. As the people begin to outnumber the animals and then to hunt them for their hides and meat, the days of peaceful coexistence are over. The animals take their revenge on the people by making them sick, creating rheumatism, coughs, and colds, aches and pains, fevers and swellings and rashes and allergies. The people are saved by their only remaining allies: the plants and trees that they have cultivated, who show them how to use herbal medicine to survive.

In the world of Inuit traditional stories, animals and humans are not such different creatures. Animals can speak to, understand, and form relationships with humans.

You Hold Me Up/ Ki Kîhcêyimin Mâna by award-winning author Monique Gray Smith is a 32-page dual language picture book about friendship and kindness ideal for preschool and primary level students as educators introduce topics such as reconciliation. In everyday interactions young children can show kindness and caring in their relationships.

Looks Like Daylight: Voices of Indigenous Kids is the 2018 paper edition release from award-winning author Deborah Ellis. Much more than interviews with 45 First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and Native American youth between the ages of 9 to 18, Looks Like Daylight offers readers a first-hand account of their cultural beliefs, values, and aspirations for the future. Despite issues of poverty, the legacy of residential and boarding school, and drug and alcohol abuse, these voices combine to create a compelling collection of Indigenous youth voices.

In Taqu Learns to Listen, Taqu learn what it means to be a good friend as well as being respectful. Taqu enjoyed being outdoors and on a summer day she went to find some of her friends. But some friends were busy doing things such as packing to leave for a camping trip and another friend was very sad. Taqu learned from her mother that talking about problems sometimes helps a person feel better. But Aqi doesn’t want to talk as Taqu keeps asking more questions. Finally Taqu has to e told that sometimes people want to be alone for a while.

A Walk on the Tundra written by Rebecca Hainnu and Anna Ziegler for Inhabit Media is a 40-page picture book featuring a bored young Inuk girl who is waiting for her friends to come out of their homes to play. She carelessly throws away her empty pop can into the ditch wondering what she will do while waiting for her friends. Then she sees her grandmother out walking. Grandmother asks her to join her on the walk to pick plants for medicines and tea. As the two walk on the tundra grandmother shows her granddaughter the helpful tundra's colourful flowers, mosses, shrubs, and lichens.

Sweetest Kulu, a charming bedtime poem, written by acclaimed Inuk throat singer Celina Kalluk describes the gifts given to a newborn baby by all the animals of the Arctic. Lyrically and tenderly told by a mother speaking to her own little Kulu, an Inuktitut term of endearment often bestowed upon babies and young children, this visually stunning book is infused with the traditional Inuit values of love and respect for the land and its animal inhabitants. Author Celina Kalluk was born and raised in Resolute Bay, Nunavut.

Families is a 32-page picture published by Inhabit Media about a grade two student who attends school in his home community of Iqaluit. The simple book explains a variety of families living in the town from single parent home, a home with a mother, father and child,  a girl with two mothers, a boy with two fathers, a girl living with her grandmother, and a boy with two families—a father in Iqaluit and a mother in Ottawa. The student begins to realize that no matter your own kind of family if there is caring and love that is what counts.

Kuei, My Friend: A Conversation on Race and Reconciliation was originally issued in French and this 2018 edition in English offers a unique exchange of communication between two Quebec individuals. Born in 1991, Natasha Kanape Fontaine is an Innu poet and multidisciplinary artist from the North Shore of Kebeq. In 2012, she became one of the voices of the Idle No More movement in Kebeq.

The Six Cedar Trees is a 24-page book offers key traditional teachings connecting people’s relationships with the land. Near the school playground there were six tall cedar trees and as eagle flew among the trees he listened carefully to the messages each tree shared about its life and connection to the creatures living in the area of the Tsawwassen First Nation of British Columbia. Each tree provided a teaching such as the wolf’s communication strength that comes from cooperating, listening with respect and sharing.
