Bone Black by Carol GoldenEagle, Cree and Dene with roots in Sandy Bay, northern Saskatchewan, is a story about Wren StrongEagle. There are too many stories about Indigenous women who go missing or are murdered, and it doesn’t seem as though official sources such as government, police or the courts respond in a way that works toward finding justice or even solutions. In Bone Black, Wren is devastated when her twin sister, Raven, mysteriously disappears after the two spend an evening visiting at a local pub.
The Trading Tree was written by Nancy Cooper, a band member of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, illustrated by Heather Charles, a member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, and translated by Myrtle Jamieson (Waaseyaankwot Kwe). Photographs for the book were taken by local photographer and designer Milena Vujanovic.

Johnny used storytelling to teach Dene youth and others to understand and celebrate Dene traditions and knowledge.
When We Had Sled Dogs: A Story from the Trapline / ācimowin ohci wanihikīskanāhk by Ida Tremblay, a Cree Elder from La Ronge, Saskatchewan and illustrated by Miriam Körner, takes readers young and old on a journey into the past when dog teams were part of the traditional way of life in Northern Saskatchewan. Inspired by Elder Ida Tremblay’s childhood memories, and told in English with Woodland Cree words and phrases, the story follows the seasonal cycle of trapline life.
Powwow Summer by Nahanni Shingoose, Saulteaux, is a coming-of-age story about a teen girl who experiences her Indigenous heritage in a meaningful way. Part Ojibwe and part white, River lives with her white mother and stepfather on a farm in Ontario. Teased about her Indigenous heritage as a young girl, she feels like she doesn't belong and struggles with her identity.
Magical Beings of Haida Gwaii is written by Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson (Haida) and Sara Florence Davidson (Haida/Settler), and illustrated by Alyssa Koski, a member of the Kainai Nation, and Judy Hilgemann, a Haida Gwaii–based artist and illustrator. The Magical Beings of Haida Gwaii is a story about the rich and vibrant culture of the Haida Gwaii whose origins date back thousands of years.
Julie Flett, Cree-Métis author, illustrator, and artist, has written and illustrated Birdsong. In this story a young girl, Katherena, moves to the city with her mother and feels lonely and no longer wants to draw, something that she usually enjoys. But soon she meets the neighbour, Agnes, who shares her love of arts and crafts with Katherena. The two become friends but as the seasons change Agnes becomes frail. Julie Flett’s textured images of birds, flowers, art, and landscapes bring vibrancy and warmth to this powerful story of friendship.
The Way Home is a memoir and autobiography by Kwakiutl photographer, woodcarver, hand engraver, painter, writer, printmaker, and jewellery maker, by David A. Neel. It is a story of returning to traditions and culture of his father’s and his people, the Kwakwaka’wakw of Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland. He had a sense of having a place of origin and reconnects with the people of his father’s work, Dave Neel, Snr and the rich symbolism of his art. He is also influenced by Ellen Neel, Mungo Martin, and Charlie James.
From Bear Rock Mountain: The Life and Times of a Dene Residential School Survivor, is the four-part memoir of artist and social activist Antoine Mountain, Dene. He endured residential schools as the Roman Catholic Church and the Government of Canada worked to destroy his language, culture and Dene identity. From Bear Rock Mountain is a dedication of Antoine Mountain’s true Dene self to children of future generations. Yet this is also a survivor’s perspective of residential schools and that these schools did not accomplish what they intended, a cultural genocide of Indigenous peoples.
