L'sitkuk: The Story of the Bear River Mi'kmaw Community is a chronological history of a Mi'kmaw community in southwestern Nova Scotia written by a freelance journalist. L'sitkuk was an important meeting place for the Mi'kmaw and the Wabanaki Confederacy in the past and continues to be a significant Mi'kmaw community. The author has conducted archival research and collected oral history of the Mi'kmaw people. She has organized this material into five chapters. The early chapters discuss pre-contact history and cultural lifestyle, the contact period, and the role of the French and English during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The two final chapters discuss the changes brought government and church officials during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These two chapters are the strongest as they present Mi'kmaw history from a Mi'kmaw perspective. The author has interviewed numerous Elders and community members on a variety of topics. Throughout the last chapter the reader will find first hand accounts of residential school experiences, legends, traditional medicine, hunting, fishing, guiding, and economic conditions. She also collected archival photographs and has included many throughout the book. These images offer the reader additional information on Mi'kmaw lifestyles during the twentieth century. Additional resources include lists of Mi'kmaw people living at Bear River recorded by government officials from 1708 to 1829, maps, and lists of Mi'kmaw place names recorded by Silas Rand and Father Pacifique. Unfortunately, there is no index to the wealth of information in this community history. Recommended for anyone interested in Mi'kmaw oral history and traditions.
