Creations from the Heart: Native Crafts and Learning Activities is accompanied by Ningwakwe Learning Press' publication, Creations from the Heart: Native Crafts and Learning Activities, Educator's Guide. Designed specifically for Ontario Native adult literacy learners and practitioners these two resources were developed to reinforce Level 3 Learning Foundations as described in the Ontario Literacy Coalition's, The Levels Descriptions Manual. Using traditional Woodland cultural arts as the basis for learning, the student resource provides step-by-step instructions for making a cornhusk mat, making a pair of moccasins, a cradleboard, a Black Ash splint basket, and creating two-dimensional art. Background details are provided for each task. For literacy students each craft comes with challenge exercises that include reading, writing, speaking and listening, Math, and data management and probability assignments. These skills are required for LBS Level 3 outcomes. Ningwakwe's goal is to provide culturally appropriate learning and teaching tools for Native adult literary learners that extend beyond mere comprehension to a hands-on approach with real-life applications. This book is a valuable adult literacy resource as well as a senior elementary and high school student craft book for First Nations fine arts.
