Who Wants Rocks? is a children's picture book by Inuit writer and storyteller Michael Kusugak. The author writes a timeless story with an environmental theme about a mountain and an prospector, named Old Joe. Drawing on the history of the Yukon Gold Rush period, Kusugak creates a memorable character who learns to appreciate the beauty of the natural environment. Old Joe is never successful in his prospecting career because every time he shouts, "Gold," prospectors from around the world converge on his mountain. There is never any gold left for Old Joe. In fact, the other miners have destroyed the entire mountain. So the old prospector moves on to a more remote mountain. One day Old Joe finally realizes the value of the environment and the devastation of too much mining. Instead of shouting about gold, Old Joe shouts "Rocks." No one pays any attention to the old prospector. So the Arctic lands are left for Old Joe to enjoy. This book introduces young readers to the impact of mining and economic development on the Canadian North. The issues surrounding development of the traditional homeland of the Inuit are presented in a storytelling format that will entertain and inform. A paper edition is also available.
