Lacrosse is a brief documentary film produced by the National Film Board of Canada in 1964. Lacrosse has the distinction of being the fastest game on two feet. In this DVD, lacrosse is introduced to the beginning player. Young players from southern Ontario demonstrate the fundamentals of the game. The film shows how box lacrosse is played as well as a player's equipment requirements. The film shows the teams using wooden lacrosse sticks, which have become something of a rarity. The film introduces the process of lacrosse stick making by focussing on the Chisholm Lacrosse Stick Factory in Cornwall, Ontario. Mohawks from Akwesasne produce the wooden sticks and this plant produced 90 % of all sticks made in Canada. They exported about 75% of their product to the United States and England where lacrosse is a mainstay of college sports programs. The final minutes of the film are devoted to the basics of starting a minor lacrosse league. The tone of the film emphasizes the health benefits of playing the sport. This is in part due to the sponsorship of National Health and Welfare Canada. Minimal attention is paid to the role of First Nations and lacrosse but the film does show Akwesasne Mohawks producing wooden lacrosse sticks. Students today may find this interesting as most minor league teams use plastic sticks. This title is also available in DVD format for home use only.
