I Can Make Art Like Andrew Qappik is one of the DVDs in the National Film Board's I Can Make Art Like?Series. Andrew Qappik is a master printmaker from Pangnirtung, Baffin Island in Nunavut. In this DVD he visits a classroom of Quebec students at The Priory School. As the artist in the classroom Andrew explains his early art influences and how he slowly learned to be a printmaker. By demonstrating the steps in creating a soapstone relief print Andrew holds the students attention. Drawing on his life experiences Andrew's art reflects the changing Arctic. The students begin to create their individual self-portraits. They begin with simple sketches and then transfer their images to a block of soapstone. Creating a relief design is a new experience for the students. They proceed to the next step by applying ink to the block and then printing the plate. The students gain an understanding of their personality through the process of creating self-portraits. The film shows the students' pride in their accomplishments and their appreciation to the artist for sharing his gifts. This film is a valuable resource for students and teachers who are wary of tackling art topics. A teacher's guide is included in the DVD jacket. This title is also available in VHS format.
