Club Native: How Thick is Your Blood? is a documentary by Mohawk filmmaker Tracey Deer that examines the meaning of Mohawk identity politics at Kahnawake. The DVD looks at the lives of four women from the community as they tell in their own words what it is like to have to defend your cultural heritage in order to live at Kahnawake. Membership rules in the community are strictly enforced as each of the women find as their ancestry is questioned. In addition their partners in life are also under scrutiny. One rule is never marry outside the Mohawk Nation and do not have a child with someone not from the Nation. Of particular note is the presence of Olympian Waneek Horn-Miller in the film. She explains her view of the policy regarding band membership and explores her views post-Oka. Three additional women explain their circumstances regarding identity and membership. One woman is filmed during a home birth and the family impact of Bill C-31 and Kahnawake membership rules are explored on this newest family member. A moving and compelling DVD from a Mohawk woman's perspective.
