Carpe Fin is a Haida manga by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. In his work he explores themes of identity, environmentalism and the human condition through art and speaking opportunities to communicate a world view that while particular to Haida Gwaii - his ancestral North Pacific archipelago - he notes this is also relevant to a contemporary and internationally-engaged audience. Carpe Fin is a story of environmental degradation and biodiversity loss through human interference. Setting off to  Lord’s Rock a group of friends try to kill a sealion by gun or pointy stick. An abandoned Carpe finds himself and his carving come to a life in an unexpected way after a storm. This graphic work in hand painted watercolours fuses Haida visual and traditional art and storytelling. Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas has created an engaging Haida manga graphic novel that utilizes the unique style of Haida art with oral tradition featuring Raven, the West Coast Trickster.
