"Legends and Teachings of Xeel's the Creator by Dr. Ellen Rice White - Kwulasulwut includes a foreword by Dr. Jo-ann Archibald - Q'um Q'um Xiiem. Kwulasulwut was from Snuneymuxw First Nation, a Coast Salish People and in this books tells four traditional stories handed down to her from her grandparents and ancestors of the Coast Salish peoples of the west coast of British Columbia. The stories and the teachings embedded in them help individuals address matters of the heart, mind, body and spirit. The Creator and the Flea Lady, The Boys Who Became a Killer Whale, The Sockeye That Became A Rainbow and The Marriage of the Seagull and the Crow are stories about new things made from Xeel's energy. Aware of the loss of cultural context of storytelling due to the formal schooling system that did not value Indigenous Knowledge and oral traditions and that these stories were excluded from the curriculum, Kwulasulwut developed discussions which are included with each story. Teachers will find these narrative discussion helpful. Kwulasulwut's accolades include Nanaimo's Woman of the Year and Mother of the Year; BC Community Achievement Award; an honourary doctorate from Vancouver Island University; the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada.
