Circle Program - Grade 2 is a language arts program kit that contains several booklets and audiocassettes designed to integrate music, art, and games with other reading and writing activities. Organized thematically, the series is designed for Native students who speak English as a second language, but is also suitable for students with an interest in the northern environment and traditional Aboriginal legends and art work. The program, developed in the Modern Language Centre of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education with funding from the Ontario Region of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, addresses listening, speaking, reading and writing skill areas. It has a strong visual-to-audio approach, and incorporates the whole word/sight reading method. This Grade 2 Level Kit contains a Teacher's Book complete with lesson plans organized around nine units; 10 copies of the Student Workbook; 10 audiocassettes; Let's Read Book set (10 copies of 3 anthologies); Listen and Read set (3 copies of 3 anthologies); Teaching Pictures, Picture Cards and a Board Game. Student books include: Gather Round, Getting Together, Signs of Spring, Story Basket One, Story Basket Two, and Story Basket Three. The program content including the stories and illustrations reflect the culture and environment of the Cree and Ojibway of Northern Ontario. However, this reading program reflects an Algonkian culture that can be easily adapted and expanded for use in primary level classrooms throughout Canada and the United States.
