Reading and Writing the Lakota Language Kit consists of a 226-page text book and two audio-cassettes. The audio-cassettes contain male and female voices that follow the designated drills for each of the thirteen teachings. They repeat each term. The teachings include: Lakota basic vowels; relative terms for greetings; gender endings; numbers; nasal vowels; parts of the body; seasons and weeks; time references; weather; food; animals; and clothing. The book and lesson drills emphasize vocabulary and pronunciation. Within each lesson and drill the author provides teachings about Lakota spirituality and kinship relationships. The author presents the Sicangu dialect spoken on the Rosebud Reservation using an orthography developed by Lakota speakers in 1982. Albert White Hat Sr. is a professor at Sinte Gleska University. The speakers on the audio-cassettes are Albert White Hat, Duane Hollow Horn Bear, Neola Spotted Tail and Jael Kampfe.
