| Nishnawbe-Aski Nation - A History of Cree and Ojibway of Northern Ontario Kit consists of a brief 53-page history text, and a Teacher?s Guide produced by the Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre for students in grades 7 ? 10. The text follows the 1986 Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum. The text begins with a condensed Cree creation story, describes the fur trade in the Hudson?s Bay and James Bay regions, the role of church missions, the effects of Canadian government legislation, the James Bay Treaty of 1905, the contemporary situation, and the development of the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation political organization. Interspersed throughout are seven biographical sketches of Cree and Ojibway elders. Unfortunately no women are included in these sketches. Maps, charts, diagrams, and photographs enhance the text. The text is dated but remains an important student resource written from the First Nation?s perspective. The Teacher?s Guide consists of 20 pages of teaching strategies, maps, text of the James Bay Treaty and Treaty No. 9, and bibliography. The kit is no longer available. The history text is still available for purchase separately. UNAVAILABLE |
