Brittney Diana: Make Ready to Dive Series was developed by Diane Silvey, a Salish teacher, for First Nations Education Division of the Greater Victoria School Division, British Columbia. The series teaches students with a limited sight vocabulary of three or four words. The program uses the direct instruction approach and teaches for mastery before starting each Reader. The first 73 basic sight words are introduced and reinforced throughout the program. This beginning reading series consists of the following: Pre-primer and Primer Student Workbooks that reinforce the basic vocabulary; Notes to the Teacher and Support Material; 24 Controlled Vocabulary Readers (Sets A, B, C, and D each contain six readers, which contain five/six basic sight words per book and a number of picture vocabulary words.); Alliteration Poems A to Z provides the opportunity for students to enrich their vocabulary, practice choral reading, and develop the ability to recite verses from memory. The Reading Series focuses on the Northwest Coast culture for content. |
