Frybread Tekarihstoyen is the Mohawk translation of Ojibwe storyteller Ferguson Plain's small picture book that explains how to make frybread. Dakota is having his lunch and other children wonder why his lunch is different from their lunches. Dakota explains in a question and answer format how he has come to school with his sandwich bread called frybread. He tells the others that his grandmother made his special lunch bread. The other children want to know how she made it, where the ingredients came from, how she cooked the dough and so on. The final question is where did the lunch meat come from? Using a humourous illustration that shows a picture of Indian steak for the lunch meat Ferguson tells this charming story in a unique way. Although it was produced as an adult literacy learner reader, this book is also most suited for the elementary classroom as it explains this contemporary First Nations staple food. Recipes are included at the back of the book. Mohawk language teacher Frank Miller provides the translation.
