OUT OF PRINT This title is no longer available from the publisher A Native American Encyclopedia - History, Culture, and Peoples is a recent general reference text that covers the major culture areas of North America. The author surveys various tribal groups within each culture area according to a standard format - history, location, religion, dwellings, technology, government, diet, customs, war, trade, arts, transportation, dress, and contemporary information. Each Nation receives a one to two page entry in this 591-page book. The author is a former teacher with an interest in Native People. By his own admission he has minimal resources for the Aboriginal People of Canada and the entries for First Nations in Canada suffer. For the general reader who wants an anthropological survey of Native People in the United States this encyclopedia may suffice. Readers would be better served by consulting the Smithsonian Institution's series, Handbook of North American Indians, and the Facts On File reference text, Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes.
