Native America: From Prehistory to First Contact is a recent publication that looks at the history of North America prior to European contact. The book examines the current historical understanding about prehistory and asks the what if question. For example, what if the Five Nations Iroquois Confederacy had substantially incorporated non-Iroquoian Nations into the Great Law? What would the Northeast culture region have looked like and what would be the outcome of early Iroquoian-European contact? Organized into 8 chapters the editors asked specific historians and scholars to examine the culture regions of North America using a what if? model. The first chapter examines the theories of origins and asks what if the Early Native Peoples did not cross the so-called land bridge. The final two chapters ask questions about first contact and first settlement by Europeans. They pose questions that examine the possibilities of European acceptance of First Nations cultures and what would occur if the Europeans were peaceful. The book uses numerous photographs and several probing questions throughout the text. The editors’ intent with this publication was to encourage student critical thinking about history. The final section of the book contains several traditional narratives from each of the culture regions that provide an additional Native American context to history and perspective. This excellent reference book contains an extensive index and bibliography.
