The 'Nations Within': Aboriginal-State Relations in Canada, the United States, and New Zealand is a comparative study about Aboriginal Peoples in three countries and their relations with European colonizers. Each 'Nation within' shares a similar position in their respective countries and each group of Aboriginal People seeks the common goal of restoring their unique status. To achieve their goals, the authors suggest that a massive restructuring of relations between Aboriginal People and the state is necessary. The book examines the roles that both parties play in the past and present of Aboriginal-government relations. The major focus is on Canada where recent developments during the early 1990s show the potential for the fulfilment of Aboriginal People's aspirations. Recommended reading for Native Studies.
