Nanabosho and Kitchie Odjig is one of the titles in the Nanabosho series by Winnipeg children's authors, Joseph and Matrine McLellan. The authors believe in the power of the oral tradition and storytelling. They take traditional stories about the Ojibwe trickster and teacher, Nanabosho, and weave a contemporary story that will appeal to all children. This story is set as a story within a story. While visiting their grandparents, two children ask their Mishomis (grandfather) about the stars known as the Big Dipper. Grandfather tells them that long ago in the time of Nanabosho these stars were known to the Anishinabe as the Great Fisher or Kitchie Odjig. Grandfather tells how Nanabosho meets Kitchie Odjig and hears him singing a song. Kitchie Odjig teaches Nanabosho the song and warns him not to change the lyrics. Nanabosho is so proud of his singing and wonders what the warning meant. Unfortunately Nanabosho disobeys and learns a valuable lesson about listening to his Elders. The text includes a glossary of Ojibwe terms and their meanings. This illustrated book is recommended for elementary level students.
