| Aboriginality: The Literary Origins of British Columbia vol. 2 is a reference guide to more than 170 First Nations and Metis authors and illustrators in British Columbia. The book is the second volume in the literary history of British Columbia. Biographical sketches of the authors are organized chronologically beginning with the earliest publications by Aboriginal People. The distinction for the earliest published author is Metis writer Martha Douglas Harris (1854-1933). Her publication, History and Folklore of the Cowichan Indians (1901), is a compilation of traditional stories. The second author discussed is E. Pauline Johnson from the Six Nations Reserve. Twigg selected writers who are from British Columbia as well as those who lived and published in the province. Therefore, readers will find entries for such authors as Tomson Highway, Daphne Odjig, Norval Morrisseau, and Beth Cuthand among the writers from British Columbia. Some authors are relegated to the noteworthy section and receive limited entries. The book contains 100 photographs of writers and illustrators, an index of authors, and bibliography. 300 titles are listed in this volume making it a valuable reference guide to British Columbia authors and illustrators. One annoying habit is the continual reference to Aboriginals rather than Aboriginal Peoples. Despite this the guide is an important contribution to First Nations and Metis literature. |
