| Aboriginal Canada, Revisited is a collection of fourteen essays originally presented during the third Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies Symposium entitled “Aboriginal Peoples in Canada in the 21st Century” held in April 2005 at the University of Greifswald in Germany. This collection presents the essays organized by themes such as Health, Social Issues and Politics; Education; Imagining and Imaging the Indian; Literature; and Print Media and Film. In the literature section the essays include a discussion of Drew Hayden Taylor's play, Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth; the role of humour in Aboriginal literature; an analysis of Tom King's novels; and a discussion of oral traditions in Ruby Slipperjack's novel, Honour the Sun. In the art section an essay by Genevieve Susemihl examines the reasons for the exclusion of contemporary First Nations art in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. The contributors include Marlene Atleo, Mansell Griffin, Robert Harding, Tricia Logan, Steffi Retzlaff, Siobhán Smith, Barbara Walberg, Kerstin Knopf, Falko Brede, Nancy Grimm, Eva Grueber, Katarzyna Juchnowicz, Thomas Rudell, and Genevieve Susemihl. Overall the book attempts to shine a light on the ways Aboriginal Peoples in Canada are making headway in the political and cultural areas despite the lingering aspects of colonization. |
