Ode'min keng - "Picking Strawberries" is a bilingual book with cassette by Ojibwe author Marie Gaudet. She has adapted her mother's childhood story and retells it in English and Ojibwe. Rose Logan Pitawanakwat tells the story in the first person. The story recounts the close relationship between child and grandmother as the two set out to pick wild strawberries. Grandmother (Nokomis) shows the child how, when, and where to pick strawberries. She explains that they will be picking berries so that they can preserve them for the winter months. The child enjoys the valuable leaning experience with her grandmother and manages to eat many berries during the outing. The story is told simply so that it captures the loving and caring relationship between the generations. The book contains wonderful full-colour drawings that detail of the experience of berry picking. The text is written in Ojibwe and English with coloured illustrations by the author. The accompanying audiocassette contains the voice of Rose Logan reading the story in English and Ojibwe. Rose Logan currently teaches Ojibwe at First Nations School in Toronto. This is a valuable resource for Ojibwe language classes at any level.
