Grand River Territory Mohawk Language was originally compiled by Julia L. Jamieson in 1958. Jamieson was an elementary school teacher at Six Nations of the Grand River, Ontario, whose family was interested in maintaining and teaching the Mohawk language. Chief Jacob Thomas Six Nations of the Grand River, revised and reissued the 5 booklets combining them into 1-70 page cerlox bound book. He maintained the original format and revised the Mohawk spelling to reflect current usage at Six Nations. In addition he produced eight 30-minute Mohawk audiocassettes. These cassettes are ideal for beginners and advanced students. They cover basic vocabulary, simple dialogue, verb roots, commands, opening remarks and a pronunciation guide. This package reflects the time period and the religious affiliation of the Jamieson family. The Jamiesons included a speech from a 1905 Tea Meeting, common Mohawk names for men and women, the Lord?s Prayer, Psalm 23, lyrics to an Indian Hymn and Bible verses. This example of a pioneering Mohawk language learning package has been enhanced by the addition of the audiocassettes making it a valuable resource for individual or classroom use.
